Seriously though . . . interesting piece, although I don't really buy the 'Alt Left' label. To be pro-Hamas may misalign with certain powerful interests, but ultimately it's not really a socially unacceptable position. It's just the 'advanced guard' or 'pilot fish' position akin to 'abolish all prisons' or 'private property is theft' that eventually drifts the culture further leftward.
Thank you. I disagree that it is socially acceptable within the msm, but at the end of my anti-influencers piece I do acknowledge that even this will (probably) move the media leftward. It just has more resistance than most online narratives that were easy to digest.
And just so we're clear, the support of Hamas is not the only sticking point. Many have either denounced Hamas or not mentioned it, but are being criticized for being anti-Zionist, being labelled as anti-Semites. Nevermind the fact there are plenty of powerful Christian Zionists in our government.
Dimes Square was almost entirely a creation from journalists. As less thinkpieces and substack scene reports get written about it, it’s only natural that it withers away.
It has been a wildly successful gentrification project for a part of chinatown / the les. Talking to friends who grew up near there before the name and are unfamiliar with any of the political and artistic details of the "scene," they see it as an aesthetically attractive place to have drinks and be cool with good looking people. That has to count for something.
